it's a debate..the problem with just cutting the top is that the strength of the chassis isn't strong so most manufacturers who makes convertibles brace the body and frame more to make them more rigid. So the added steel bracing needed adds weight.

Convertibles are heavier due to added suspension components, and the parts that go along with the retractable roof (electric motor, arms, etc), and the roof itself. I drive a corolla, and I make love to it every time I drive it ;)
